GE Capital staff opt for no phones

Date: 21 June 2010

GE Capital UK is the latest company to stop the use of mobile phones in cars after all of their employees with a company mobile phone driving on business signed a driver declaration opting not to use phones behind the wheel.

While the move is not an imposed ban, GE Capital is advising all employees to switch off phones while driving and let voicemails pick up messages that they can respond to once out of their vehicle.

The firm said the "recommendation includes the use of speaker phone, installed hands free kits/GSM and Bluetooth devices".

Chief executive John Jenkins said: "The safety of our employees and other road users is of utmost importance to us, which is why we want to limit the use of mobile phones while driving as much as possible. It is vital that all drivers remain focused on driving when they are behind the wheel and we hope that our actions assist our drivers in doing so."
