Grey fleet numbers falling

Date: 28 May 2010

The number of grey fleet drivers within smaller fleets fell from 42% of employees to 28% over the past 12 months, according to new research, with the recession combining with businesses finding alternative transport methods and increased use of daily rental.

The survey of more than 400 SME senior managers by Enterprise Rent-A-Car also found that smaller businesses are failing to take responsibility for grey fleet drivers, with 40% running no document checks at all on those employees using their own vehicles on work business. The research also found just a quarter of businesses check the suitability of a grey fleet driver's vehicle, and 60% don't check insurance details.

"Businesses prepared to let employees drive their own cars for work must begin to understand that they have a responsibility to ensure their employees' cars are fit-for-purpose and employees are licensed and insured properly," said Rob Ingram, director of business rental at Enterprise. "This is a tough time for business and every perceived money-saving tactic must look tempting. But it is a false economy to send vehicles onto the road that are not roadworthy, and businesses will pay a heavy cost for doing so."
