Road safety minister Paul Clark has revealed plans for councils to introduce more 20mph limits without the need for speed-humps.
The move follows a trial in Portsmouth which "suggested it was possible to significantly reduce speeds on residential streets without speed humps or other traffic calming measures", said a DfT spokesman.
The DfT is now seeking the views of local councils on the proposals before publishing the guidance.
