More proof of need to licence check

Date: 03 February 2010

The AA has emphasised the need for firms to check the driving licences of all employees using vehicles on work business.

The organisation's DriveTech driver training subsidiary said it recently carried out a check for a high profile blue-chip company and found six drivers without a valid licence.

Five of the six's licences had been revoked by the DVLA, one on medical grounds and four as they hadn't notified the DVLA of their change of address, while one had a live drink-driving offence. One of the six had been driving illegally since March 2006.

"Employers need to be more vigilant in checking driving licences and carrying out DVLA checks on staff that may have had licences revoked for medical reasons or they might be liable," said AA president Edmund King.
