New Government coalition agreement includes nationwide EV charging

Date: 13 May 2010

A mandate to introduce a nationwide recharging network for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles is one of the headline agreements affecting business drivers from the list of agreements coming out of the Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition talks revealed last week.

Also on the list is confirmation of an emergency Budget within 50 days, with early predictions centring on 23 June, and the move to a fixed-term parliament, with the next general election scheduled for the first Thursday in May 2015.

The 1% National Insurance rise scheduled for next year will be scrapped for staff earning less than £20,800 per year, and other issues related to transport include confirmation of plans to establish a high-speed rail network, and scrapping plans for a third runway at Heathrow as well as the refusal of additional runways at Stansted or Gatwick airports. Work on the high-speed rail network, connecting London and Heathrow with Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds, is scheduled to commence in 2015, with a second phase expanding to the north east, Scotland and Wales.

The new Transport secretary is Philip Hammond, previously shadow chief secretary to the treasury in opposition, George Osborne was appointed chancellor, the Liberal Democrats' Vince Cable is the new business secretary and his party colleague Chris Huhne is now in charge of energy and climate change.
