Road schemes survive cutbacks

Date: 04 November 2010

The DfT has confirmed that 14 major road improvement projects have survived the spending review, and that it has set up a £600m fund that local authorities can bid for to contribute towards further works in their area.

The major projects include new hard shoulder running schemes on the M1 J32-35a and J39-42, M6 J5-8, M25 J5-6/7 and J23-27, M60 J8-12 and M62 J18-20. Junctions 12-15 of the M60 will get an extra anti-clockwise lane, while the A11 in Norfolk will get a dualling of the carriageway between Fiveways junction and Thetford.

The M4 and M5 around Bristol, the M1 in Derbyshire and M62 near Leeds will be improved too. The bottleneck on the A23 at Handcross, Sussex will be addressed, and the A556 between Knutsford and Bowdon will be upgraded to full dual carriageway.
