Volvo drives down emissions

Volvo Car UK has boosted its line-up of sub-100g/km C02 emission models.
The brand has slashed C02 emissions on Driv-e versions of its S40 saloon and V50 estate by 5g/km to 99g/km.
The reduction means the models, which feature stop/start technology, join the C30 Driv-e with emissions below the 100g/km threshold.
Volvo said the changes were good news for company car drivers who could opt for a prestige car while lowering their benefit-in-kind tax bills. The carmaker claimed the lower emission V50 was now the largest and most versatile sub-100g/km estate car available in the UK. Both the V50 and S40 qualify for road tax exemption and achieve fuel economy of up to 74mpg.
Volvo's Driv-e badge is attached to its most environmentally-friendly models in their respective classes. As well as the C30, S40 and V50, two larger models with C02 emissions of 119g/km are currently included - the V70 and S80. Next year Drive derivatives of the new S60 and V60 models will join the line-up.
Volvo Car UK is continuing to lobby London mayor Boris Johnson to reconsider the capital's Congestion Charge through its Emissions Equality campaign.
Under current rules hybrid models are exempt from the charge despite some having higher emissions than some diesel and petrol cars. Volvo said proposed new rules could see all sub-100g/km vehicles exempted from January 2011.
