BMW 5-series hybrid to be sub-150g/km

Date: 13 October 2011

BMW's ActiveHybrid 5-series will offer 149g/km CO2 and a 19% BIK ratings plus a 44mpg capability when it arrives in UK showrooms next February, priced at £46,860, more than £8000 dearer than an equivalent performance 535iSE.

The petrol-electric power train, with a combined 340hp output, is complemented by a satellite navigation system, which reads the road ahead and prepares the car's systems to respond in the most efficient way.

In advance of steep gradients the technology can store battery energy to provide an electrical boost to the engine, to be recouped later in a journey.

Sitting six bands below the standard 535i the ActiveHybrid remains capable of a governed 155mph top speed and zero to 62mph time of 5.9 seconds, the same figures as the conventional counterpart. The rear mounted high-voltage battery limits boot space to 375 litres and the electric motor is incorporated into the transmission housing.
