BMW uncovers new Gran Tourer

Date: 16 March 2011

BMW has revealed details of its third generation 6 Series Coupe, which goes on sale in the UK on 15 October.

The model is offered with two turbo-powered petrol engines, the 650i and the 640i.

The 4.4-litre eight-cylinder twin-turbocharger unit in the 650i Coupe develops a maximum 407hp between 5500 and 6400rpm with peak torque of 600Nm between 1750 and 4500rpm.

The 650i version sprints from 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds and reaches an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.

BMW claims performance does not come at the expense of efficiency and says the engine records relatively frugal combined fuel consumption of 27.2mpg and CO2 emissions of 243g/km.

The 640i Coupe gets a six-cylinder in-line single turbo engine with Valvetronic valve control. The 3.0-litre drivetrain develops a maximum 320hp at 5800rpm and max torque of 450Nm between 1300 and 4500rpm.

It is capable of covering 0-62mph in 5.4 seconds on the way to a limited top speed of 155mph.

BMW claims this version achieves 36.7mpg on the combined cycle with CO2 emissions of 179g/km.

The 640i Coupe debuts the ECO PRO fuel saving technology. Via the Drive Dynamic Control button ECO PRO modifies the engine management system, accelerator mapping and gear shift characteristics to encourager a low-revving driving style.

In addition power usage for electronically operated functions is regulated for maximum efficiency.

As well as the highest specification offered on a 6 Series, BMW claims the new Coupe features as an option the most advanced audio system the brand has ever offered with the 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen High-End Surround Sound.

BMW will announce prices closer to the launch date.
