Chevrolet announces Volt price

Date: 08 July 2011

The Chevrolet Volt

The Chevrolet Volt will cost £28,545 when it goes on sale in the UK early next year.

The price for the E-REV (Extended Range Electric Vehicle) includes the £5000 grant from the Government for plug-in vehicles.

Chevrolet claims the Volt will be "less expensive than some traditional petrol or diesel-engined five door hatchbacks".

The car has an electric only range of between 30 and 50 miles, depending on road and traffic conditions, after which its on-board generator sustains battery power.

The E-REV electric drivetrain powers the wheels with the petrol engine installed to prevent the battery going flat and thus eliminate "range anxiety".

Chevrolet claims that if the Volt is only used for short commutes, the driver will have no need to put petrol in the car.

Chevrolet's UK boss Mark Terry said: "The Volt is the first compromise-free electric car with zero-emission capability. You can use it for going to work and back during the week without putting fuel in, but it's also an electric car that you can use for a family holiday."
