CO2 drops to record low

Date: 11 July 2011

Average new car CO2 emissions dropped to 138.9g/km in the second quarter of the year and to 139.7g/km for the first half-year - the first time they have fallen below 140g/km.

Overall, the market fell 6.2% to 183,125 units in June, according to the SMMT, but fleet registrations were up 2% to 102,209 year-on-year to take a 55.8% market share.

Business sales, to fleets of fewer than 25 cars, plummeted 23% to 8124 however, and private sales also fell sharply.

In the first half of the year fleet sales of 537,815 were up 3.4% compared to the same period in 2010, accounting for 52% of the total market.

Registrations of diesel cars rose 4% in June and are up by 7.5% in the year-to-date.

SMMT boss Paul Everitt said: "June new car registrations continued to perform in line with industry expectations with robust demand in the fleet sector and a relatively weak retail market. Slow but steady economic growth in the second half of the year should see volumes increase, although the overall market is still expected to be around 1.93 million units."Average new car CO2 emissions dropped to 138.9g/km in the second quarter of the year and to 139.7g/km for the first half-year - the first time they have fallen below 140g/km.
