Dartford Tunnel suspended under trial scheme

Date: 01 September 2011

The toll for using the Dartford Crossing was temporarily suspended on Friday 26 August, the first time since a trial scheme kicked off on 1 July.

An incident at J28 of the anti-clockwise M25 left northbound traffic queuing back into the tunnel and down as far as J5, and the toll barriers were used to control and prevent vehicles queuing in the tunnel at the same time as the toll being suspended.

The Highways Agency suspended the charge for six hours. The agency is analysing the impact of the suspension as part of the six-month trial to cut congestion that runs until the end of the year.
