DfT plans to cut rush-hour roadworks

Date: 02 September 2011

The number of rush-hour road works could be cut, under plans announced by Transport Secretary Philip Hammond.

Under the proposed lane rental schemes, councils would be able to charge utility firms to dig up the busiest roads during peak times when roadworks cause the most disruption.

Companies would avoid charges by carrying out works during quieter periods or at night. Hammond said one estimate has valued the loss to the economy from road works congestion at £4 billion a year.

The consultation published by the Department for Transport, which outlines how lane rental schemes could be implemented, will close on 31 October.

Revenue from such a measure would be used by councils to fund measures which could help to reduce future road works disruption.
