DFT to map UK charging points

The Department for Transport has announced plans to map the location of EV charging points across the country in an effort to make it easier for motorists to locate them.
Transport minister Norman Baker and business minister Mark Prisk made the announcement earlier this month and revealed that UK charging point specialist POD Point has been tasked with developing the system.
Known as the National Chargepoint Registry, the database is due to go live in early 2012, alongside a supplementary system called the Central Whitelist, which will ensure that drivers don't have to sign up to a new scheme whenever they charge their vehicle in a different location.
The Central Whitelist will work on a membership card basis, but the DTF says that neither it nor the registry will retain drivers' personal data. POD Point will host a certain amount of data on its server and it is in the process of developing systems that will allow recharging schemes to easily upload and download relevant information. The firm won an £89,000 contract, excluding VAT, from the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) to develop the scheme.
Both networks will be rolled out over two years, following which custody is expected to be transferred to the plug-in vehicle infrastructure industry.
