Environment Agency goes electric

The Environment Agency in Brampton, Huntingdon, has taken delivery of its first all-electric fleet car.
Hitachi Capital Vehicle Solutions has supplied the Mitsubishi iMiev on a contract-hire basis for staff to put through its paces while at work.
Having factored in CO2 from electricity-generating stations, the Environment Agency claimed emissions from the car were 70% lower than a petrol-powered city car. It said the car would cost 2p a mile to fuel and would offer a further saving to the Agency in being exempt from road tax.
The iMiev can be charged from a standard three-pin socket but the Agency hopes a new network of rapid electric-car charging points across the east of England will soon be up and running as a result of the Evalu8 project.
The Environment Agency currently runs Toyota Prius hybrids on its fleet.
