Fleets must check insurance ahead of law change, urges ACFO

Car fleet operators' association ACFO has advised fleet operators that all vehicles used on business trips should be listed on the Motor Insurance Database (MID, which is managed by the Motor Insurers' Bureau).
ACFO issued the advice, which includes grey fleet cars, before the introduction of the Continuous Insurance Enforcement law on 20 June, which it said will affect fleets as well as private motorists.
The new legislation will make it an offence to keep as well as to drive an uninsured vehicle.
The Government has launched an awareness campaign to remind owners of the law change, which means vehicles must be insured unless the DVLA has received notification that they are being kept off-road and has issued a Statutory Off Road Notice (SORN).
ACFO said the law change reinforces the fact that the onus to make sure a vehicle is insured and listed on the MID rests with the policy holder.
ACFO boss Stewart Whyte said: "In general fleet operators have a good record for having insurance in place. However, there are some potential traps and an early review - plus ongoing attention - is vital to avoid possible prosecution."
