GS is a 'real opportunity' for Lexus

Date: 04 April 2011   |   Author:

Lexus is viewing its next GS executive model as a "real opportunity" because it is also looking at an additional, lower-displacement model, rather than only having the one 3.5-litre petrol-electric hybrid, as is currently the case.

The current GS is on a par with the likes of BMW's 530d, but with the majority of sales being further down the engine size range in that sector, Lexus is missing out on the executive volume heartland.

The next-generation upper medium IS model will also be hybrid only, ending the brand's dalliance with diesel engines, and these models will follow on from the new Audi A3-rivalling CT200h, which will quickly become the company's biggest volume model.

"Hybrid technology for Lexus is very relevant in the UK and globally, I think we can appeal more widely with GS and IS," said Toyota and Lexus UK boss Jon Williams. "With next generation of hybrid technology in these cars, see the appeal of Lexus growing as we replace models."
