Laser technology cuts motorway closures from fatalities

Police are set to utilise new laser-scan technology at fatal road accidents in an attempt to reopen roads more quickly.
The scanners will deliver a 3D image of the road crash site on a computer screen and provide a more comprehensive picture of the scene.
It is expected to cut the time that investigators spend examining the scene and collecting evidence and will save the UK economy £1bn a year lost due to motorway closures following serious crashes.
Government figures have revealed that in 2010, more than 18,000 full or partial motorway closures occurred, totalling more than 20,000 hours, at a cost of £50,000 per hour.
The technology uses a tripod-mounted scanner to take a 360° digital image of the crash site in about four minutes.
The system will initially deployed in England where the Department for Transport will fund the £3m required to purchase 20 scanners.
