Massive rise in low-emission cars

Date: 03 June 2011

Research by BusinessCar has shown a huge rise in the number of sub-121g/km models on sale in the UK. While there were 272 models on manufacturers' price lists three years ago, that figure has now jumped to 894, illustrating the speed at which makers have developed new models to take advantage of the demand for vehicles in lower tax bands.

Although the 120g/km boundary will take on less significance next April with changes to the BIK tax system, there's no reason to believe the pace of innovation will slow, evidenced by the number of sub-100g/km models in the UK more than doubling in the past 12 months from 48 to 101.

According to the SMMT, the sub-121g/km segment has adopted a significantly more important role in recent years. While it only accounted for 3.6% of fleet sales in 2007, that figure rocketed to 24.2% in 2010.
