Date: 04 August 2011

Mazda is to unveil its new CX-5 compact crossover SUV at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The manufacturer said the model is the first in a new generation of products to feature the full range of its Skyactiv Technology, which includes new petrol and diesel engines, automatic and manual transmissions, body and chassis.. It also introduces the brand's new design theme - Kodo-Soul of Motion.

The CX-5 will be launched to markets globally from the beginning of next year.

Engines for the European specification include Mazda's Skyactiv-g 2.0-litre petrol and Skyactiv-d 2.2-litre diesel unit, which will be offered in Standard and High Power versions.

Mazda claims each engine has a record-breaking compression ratio of 14:1 for "ideal efficiency".

It also claims to have achieved CO2 emissions of less than 120g/km for the Standard Power manual diesel derivative with front-wheel drive and i-stop fuel-saving technology,

The CX-5 is the first production car to feature the Kodo-Soul of Motion design language that was previewed on the Shinari and Minagi concept models.

The new look includes "a prominent new frontal treatment with a bolder Mazda family face".

The upgraded Mazda3 will join the CX-5 on the Mazda stand.
