Mercedes reveals new SLK roadster

Date: 19 January 2011

The new Mercedes-Benz SLK roadster, which goes on sale in June, is up to 25% more economical than its predecessor according to the carmaker.

The third-generation model will initially be offered in three models, a 2.0-litre 184hp, 2.5-litre 205hp and a 3.5-litre 306hp V6 all with Merc's green badge BlueEfficiency.

The most efficient SLK 200 will achieve up to 46.3mph in automatic transmission with a top speed of 174mph. The improved efficiency across the range is largely due to its stop-start system, according to Mercedes.

The car premieres the brand's optional panoramic roof, named Magic Sky Control, which is transparent glass, but at a touch of a button can become opaque. It also uses technology which deflects the sun rays to keep the car's interior cool.

Pricing and trim levels are still to be confirmed.

"The new SLK embodies the role of the trend-setter like no other car," said Dr Dieter Zetsche, head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

"I am convinced that with its passionate design, its high-quality interior and its modesty at the filling station it will continue to provide an enormous amount of fun on the road in future, too, consolidating its status as a cult roadster."
