Motability responds to revelation

Date: 30 June 2011

Motability Operations, which runs the UK's largest fleet, has come under fire following an exposé by The Sunday Times about abuse of the Motability Car Scheme. The newspaper's investigation uncovered possible abuse of the scheme where taxpayer-funded cars were not being used to help disabled people.

In a statement, the company responded: "Motability has a dedicated scheme-protection unit to investigate any suspected misuse of a Motability car. Where misuse is proven or strongly suspected, the car may be taken away and the customer prevented from returning to the Motability Scheme."

According to the leasing company more than 800 customers had their cars removed this way in the past financial year.
