New transport minister appointed

Date: 31 October 2011

Justine Greening has replaced Philip Hammond as the secretary of state for transport. Greening, MP for Putney, Roehampton and Southfields was previously Treasury economic secretary and was elected to Parliament in 2005. Hammond has become the defence secretary, replacing Liam Fox who resigned from the position.

In Greening's first speech after her appointment she highlighted "how much a high-performing transport system matters".

Transport issues she will take on include proposals for a 80mph speed limit and the high-speed rail network.

She is well-known for opposing Labour's plans to build a third runway at Heathrow Airport and broached this subject in her recent speech, declaring she is not "anti-aviation". "I passionately believe that the success of our airports and airlines is critical to the success of London and Britain," Greening said.
