Older cars 'difficult' to sell

Date: 25 March 2011

Fleet managers will "feel the challenge" of disposing of ageing and high-mileage cars, according to Manheim boss Mike Pilkington.

The firm's data shows that the average age during the last quarter of 2010 was three months higher than the same period in 2009, five months higher than 2008 and seven month higher than 2007. Similarly, average mileage in quarter four of last year was 3886 miles higher than 2009, 7777 miles higher than 2008 and 8468 miles higher than 2007.

"For 2011 and into 2012, fleets are going to feel the challenge of how they are going to deal with these ageing and higher-mileage vehicles," Pilkington said.

Pilkington added that 2011 was set to be another unpredictable year for the remarketing industry, but quarter one had been as strong as is traditionally the case.
