Road deaths: lowest on record

The number of people killed in road accidents fell by 16% to 1857 last year, the lowest total since records began in 1926, according to new figures from the Department for Transport.
The number of deaths among car users dropped by 20% from 1059 to 842, accounting for 45% of fatalities, while the number seriously injured fell by 11% to 8914. Total reported casualties among car users was 133,212, 7% down on 2009.
Overall traffic volume fell by 1.6% last year, with car traffic falling by 2.1% on 2009., while the DfT's analysis reported average car speeds in free flowing traffic of 69mph on motorways, 68mph on dual carriageways, 47mph on single carriageways, 35mph in 40 limit roads and 30mph average in 30mph zones.
The DfT survey found 49% of cars exceed the motorway speed limit on free-flowing roads, with 14% 10mph or more above the limit. On dual carriageways, 42% of cars were found to be speeding, and 7% of those on single carriageways exceeded the 60mph limit.
