Scrap workplace parking levies, says AA

Date: 23 May 2011

The AA president Edmund King has called on workplace parking levies to be scrapped.

King branded the levy a "tax on work" as the AA joined the Government in an initiative to cut red tape in transport. King is to act as a 'sector champion' to advise on what regulations should be abolished.

The Government has placed more than 400 Whitehall road transport regulations on the Red Tape Challenge website for four weeks. It invites comments as to whether regulations are well designed and provide vital protections or are badly implemented and should be scrapped.

The AA also questioned why some bus lanes restrict cars for 24 hours even when bus services do not run around the clock, why driving licences should be renewed after 10 years and called for the Dartford tolls to be scrapped.

King said: "Good road transport should be about getting from A to B in an efficient, economic, safe and sustainable manner. It should not be about filling in forms from A to Z or complying with historic, bureaucratic and irrelevant regulations."
