Short-term rental on the rise

Date: 19 December 2011   |   Author: Jack Carfrae

Businesses are increasingly turning to short-term rental to reduce costs, especially as an alternative to grey fleet usage, according to Alison Chadwick, director of regional operations at Thrifty Car Rental.

Addressing this month's BVRLA conference, she said: "There are a lot of new customers and a greater use of short-term rentals as a flexible transport solution in both the business and retail sectors."

She said that the rental industry had seen a change in attitude towards vehicle ownership, and that drivers were beginning to use rental as a low-cost alternative to periodic journeys.

Chadwick admitted that the image of car rental had come under fire in the past but that it was improving: "We've hosted two workshops this year and we think that we've moved on significantly. We've had no negative press this year."

The rental industry has also made inroads with an exemption to the 14-day cooling-off period for consumers. This loophole previously allowed individuals to theoretically hire a vehicle for two weeks and receive a full refund.
