The start point for the best source of fleet information

Van operators' fuel guilt

Date: 17 November 2011

Britain's van fleet operators and their drivers are guilty of not taking steps to maximise fuel efficiency although they are conscious of how much diesel and petrol they waste while working.

These are the contrasting findings from a survey commissioned by VW Commercial Vehicles UK, which reported that just 42% of CV fleet operators considered planning lower-consumption routes for staff, 81% of whom operate without satellite navigation.

Equally, only 35% of the companies polled took into account the driving habits of their staff, and just 18% of drivers received any form of economy-driving tuition.

This is compounded by just 23% of drivers having routes planned for them and the same percentage feeling they were making "inefficient journeys", often having to make two trips on the same route in the same day.

On a separate but parallel issue, company logos influence driver behaviour, reflected by 58% of the 60% of drivers using vans carrying corporate livery claiming it made them drive "more carefully".
