Vauxhall Astra gets mobile computer

Date: 28 March 2011

Vauxhall is to offer fleet customers a dashboard-based mobile computing system with its lower-medium Astra.

The Panasonic Toughbook CF-19 rotating screen convertible notebook is aimed at field-based staff and uses WiFi and 3G broadband to enable users to communicate with their main offices.

Vauxhall said the system is initially aimed at the police service and could drastically cut the time needed to log crimes.

Dick Ellam, Vauxhall Special Vehicles manager, said: "The Toughbook enables the police to operate a mobile office system. Before built-in Toughbook systems were available an officer would have to spend about a third of his or her time in the office."

The Toughbook fits into a docking system inside the Astra's glovebox. It can be removed to allow the laptop screen to be viewed in both upright and downward positions. It is linked to an 8.4 inch high resolution touch screen in the dash.
