VW launches new Passat Bluemotion

Date: 10 June 2011

Volkswagen has added a Bluemotion model to the seventh generation of its Passat range.

Prices start at £19,875 for the saloon and rise to £21,180 for the estate.

The manufacturer claims the latest standard Passat models have improved upon the fuel economy of the previous generation Bluemotion derivatives and says the new Bluemotion technology has raised the bar still further.

The Passat Bluemotion is powered by a modified version of VW's 1.6-litre common rail TDI engine, which develops 105hp and is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox.

As well as the stop/start and battery regeneration systems that continue to feature on the Bluemotion, the new model includes changes to improve aerodynamics and reduce drag. These include low rolling resistance tyres, suspension lowered by 15mm at the front and 7.5mm at the rear and a revised radiator grille and underbody panel to minimise drag. The saloon comes with a compact rear spoiler.

Lightweight 16-inch steel rims are fitted as standard with 17-inch alloys offered as an option.

VW has forecast average combined fuel consumption of 68.9mpg for the saloon and 65.7mpg for the estate. It expects CO2 emissions of 109g/km and 113g/km respectively, putting the saloon into VED band B and the estate in band C.
