2012 Autumn Statement - Government announces £1 billion upgrade for UK roads

The Chancellor, George Osborne, has annouced an investment of £1 billion to upgrade some of the UK's major roads in his 2012 Autumn Statement this afternoon.

The A1 and M25 motorways are to be upgraded, the A5 and M1 are to be linked up and the A30 is to be converted to a dual carriageway.

The A1 London to Newcastle route will be upgraded to "motorway standard" according to the Chancellor.

He also annouced investments for the rail network and plans to extend the London's Northern tube line down to Battersea station.
