24,000 company car drivers shouldn't be on the road

Thousands of workers in the UK are on the road illegally, according to statistics from the Licence Bureau.

According to the company, which verifies driving licences on behalf of businesses, there are approximately 24,000 business drivers on the road that should not be.

This is based on the fact that three in every 1000 licences the company checks are illegal, and that there are around eight million people entitled to drive for work in the UK.

Of the non-compliant drivers, the Licence Bureau found that 43% were using a provisional licence, 31% were driving on a revoked licence and 9% were disqualified.

Malcolm Maycock, chief executive of the Licence Bureau, said: "Time and time again we see drivers that have made false statements to their employers about their licences."
