Audi to cut A3 emissions during new model's life

Date: 05 November 2012   |   Author:

Audi's UK MD Martin Sander told BusinessCar the new A3 will drop to less than 99g/km in this model's lifetime

Audi has confirmed that it will make improvements to the emissions of its A3 model during the new model's life.

The new A3, launched in three-door form last month with a five-door Sportback following next spring, currently has a low of 99g/km, the same as the previous A3 but this time with a full range of trim options rather than the base specification only.

"We're very proud to reach 99g/km with no restriction on equipment and spec," Audi UK boss Martin Sander told BusinessCar.

"Some competitors are clearly doing it with smaller wheels or where you're unable to upgrade to SE or Sport etc, but the A3, with whatever trim you choose, is still 99g/km, which is unique in the marketplace."

Sander said there will be improvements on that figure in the coming years.

"We wouldn't be Audi if we weren't trying to bring further development. Later in the life cycle there will be a product below 99g/km," he said.

The UK boss also defended the A3's conservative styling, which hasn't strayed far from its predecessor.

"The A3 is not a dramatic new design - it shouldn't be as the outgoing car is one of the successes in the marketplace," he said.

"When you look into the design and detail there is so much value in the product and we are extremely confident it will be a great success, especially in fleet."
