BMW plans suite of smaller models

Date: 12 December 2012   |   Author:

BMW is planning further moves into new niche segments, with the firm's sales and marketing boss Ian Robertson confirming an X4 crossover, as well as an MPV to rival the Mercedes B-class, previewed by the Active Tourer concept car earlier this year.

The latter will be BMW's first front-wheel drive model and the first to use a new platform developed for BMW and Mini, which will spawn up to 20 cars, a dozen of which have so far been approved for development.

"We know by developing new segments we ensure growth," said Robertson.

"The small car segment will grow fast and premium will grow faster than others so this sets a new direction for new segments BMW will grow into."

The firm is also planning a change in naming strategy for its new 3-series Coupe and Convertible.

Both of the sportier-styled cars, due in late 2013, will be badged 4-series, giving them more independence from the saloon and Touring versions.
