BMW to build i8 engine in the UK

Date: 20 June 2012   |   Author: Jack Carfrae

BMW has announced that it will build the 1.5-litre three-cylinder, twin-turbocharged engine for the i8 plug-in hybrid sports car at its UK engine manufacturing plant at Hams Hall near Birmingham.

The company said that it was not anticipating any significant change to staffing levels as a result.

The i8 is due for production in 2014 and, in addition to the engine, will also be powered by an electric motor, with a total power output of 349hp. It is said to be good for 94mpg and 0-62mph in less than five seconds.

Business Secretary Vince Cable said: "BMW's decision to produce engines for their i8 plug-in hybrid sports car at Hams Hall is more good news for the UK automotive sector and underlines its growing competitive strength.

"It is yet another indication that international companies see the UK as one of the best places to develop and manufacture low emission vehicle technologies."
