BT cuts 2000 vehicles from fleet in efficiency drive

Date: 23 July 2012   |   Author: Jack Carfrae

Telecommunications giant BT has shed 2000 vehicles from its fleet following an efficiency assessment.

BT Fleet, the business vehicle management arm of BT Group, which operates 33,000 vehicles in the UK, created a series of tests to examine areas including fuel usage, SMR and telematics and concluded it could feasibly drop 2000 vehicles from service.

The majority of the organisation's fleet is made up of commercial vehicles, which are used by its Openreach engineering division.

The firm claims that its vehicle utilisation programme has generated "significant cost reductions" and saved £20 million in capital expenditure by refurbishing existing fleet vehicles and putting them back into use.

David Bowen, managing director of BT Fleet, said: "We believed there was an opportunity to analyse Openreach's fleet operation in greater detail and make significant savings, thereby running it in a more intelligent manner without impacting the company's customers. We have reduced its annual running costs."
