Car makers sign-up to fast-charging structure programme

Date: 18 May 2012   |   Author: Jack Carfrae

Eight major car manufacturers have announced plans to adopt a new fast-charging system for electric vehicles that could slash charging times to a fraction of their current length and revolutionise the infrastructure.

Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Daimler, Ford, General Motors, Porsche and Volkswagen have all signed up to support the technology, which is known as DC Fast Charging with a Combined Charging System and is tipped to be able to fully charge an electric vehicle in 15-20 minutes. Current recharging times stand at six to eight hours.

The system is intended to offer a more convenient and affordable way of charging electric vehicles and to encourage the widening of a charging infrastructure.

The European association of vehicle manufacturers (ACEA) has chosen the system as its AC/DC-charging interface for all new vehicles from 2017, so it is likely to become standardised across the industry in the long run.

The car manufacturers that have committed to the technology have vehicles in development that will use it, the first of which (as yet unnamed) will be on sale in 2013.

The system was trialled earlier this month at the Electric Vehicle Symposium in Los Angeles and, if successful, it is said to be able to simplify development and infrastructure, improve charging reliability, reduce the total cost-of-ownership of EVs and be easy to maintain.
