Corporate manslaughter racks up £484,000 fine

Date: 13 August 2012   |   Author: Jack Carfrae

The Corporate Manslaughter Act has claimed its third victim in the UK and ratcheted up its most expensive fine to date.

Storage manufacturer Lion Steel Limited has been fined £484,000 with £84,000 in costs, following a week-long trial at Manchester Crown Court where it pleaded guilty in relation to the death of employee Steve Berry, who was killed when he fell through a fragile roof panel at the company's site in May 2008.

No corporate manslaughter case has been charged against an at-work driver as yet, but numerous industry bodies are warning that it is only a matter of time.
