Crash-avoidance technology to lower insurance premiums

Date: 16 October 2012   |   Author:

Cars fitted with self-braking systems that prevent or mitigate low-speed accidents as standard will benefit from a significant drop in insurance groups from this month.

Autonomous emergency braking systems, such as Volvo's BusinessCar Techie Award-winning City Safety, have been shown to reduce rear impact accidents by 28% by chauffeur company Tristar Worldwide, which provides airline Virgin's chauffeur service, while research by an American highway safety organisation that owners of Volvo XC60 models fitted with AEB systems made 25% fewer insurance claims, with a 27% drop in third-party claims.

The Association of British Insurers predicted a five-band drop in insurance groups for cars fitted with the system as standard, although at this stage those vehicles that offer it as an option, such as some Ford models, won't get the insurance benefit.
