The start point for the best source of fleet information

DfT and MoD respond to BusinessCar's grey fleet freedom of information request

Date: 22 August 2012   |   Author: Tristan Young

The Department for Transport and the Ministry of Defence have now responded to BusinessCar's Freedom of Information requests surrounding grey fleet mileage within each department.

The responses, which did not arrive in time for the full grey fleet investigation in the previous issue, show that both departments have reduced the number of business miles driven per employee over each of the past four years.

The DfT has cut both the number of employees claiming business miles on their private

car as well as the miles per employee. However, this final figure of 1727 miles for 2011 is still nearly double the Government average of 980 miles.

The MoD recorded an average miles per employee figure of 912 miles in 2011. However, due to its size, the MoD still has the highest 2011 total grey fleet mileages seen by BusinessCar at 68.7 million miles.

An MoD spokesman said: "Current guidance to staff states all travel should be minimised wherever possible and, where it is necessary, the most cost-effective means should be used.

"Expenditure on travel has decreased in the past few years and overall mileage has reduced year-on-year."
