Emergency braking systems test becoming part of Euro NCAP rating

Date: 27 June 2012   |   Author: Jack Carfrae

Crash test organisation Euro NCAP has announced that autonomous emergency braking systems (AEBs) will become a fundamental part of its star rating system from 2014, with the hope of European authorities eventually rendering it a mandatory safety requirement.

The technology has been proven to reduce accidents by up to 27% and has been pioneered by companies such as Volvo with its City Safe system, but it is far from standardised across the market.

Euro NCAP claims it is unavailable on 79% of vehicles on-sale in Europe and that 66% of manufacturers do not offer it.

This comes following reports that EU officials are set to agree to a more realistic standardised economy and emissions test. Plans were discussed at the Cars 21 summit earlier this month with a view to agreeing final details in 2014 and implementing it in 2020.
