Enterprise car share scheme helps council slash grey fleet costs

Rutland County Council has reported a reduction in business mileage claims by a third due to implementing a car-sharing system to replace council-owned pool cars and grey fleet usage.

The organisation, which was previously operating a pair of its own pool cars and relying heavily on private vehicles, implemented a scheme run by rental firm Enterprise that comprises "virtual pool cars" that are based on site and are owned and maintained by Enterprise, along with an online booking system.

Dave Brown, operational director for places at Rutland County Council, said: "Two of our teams initially piloted the programme, while we listened carefully to what the employees trialling the programme had to say.

"Availability and ease of booking were quickly highlighted as the two main issues the initiative had to get right - both of which were addressed".

We're still evaluating the programme but so far it's been extremely successful, with our grey fleet costs cut by around a third.

We have already expanded the original scheme and brought in additional car-sharing vehicles.

"The project also helps staff to focus on the site visit or meeting they need to undertake, rather than worry about using their own cars."
