Date: 20 August 2012

Toyota claims its new Auris will offer improved dynamics, more distinctive styling and higher equipment levels as well as being cheaper to run when the lower medium hatchback model arrives in the UK early next year.

According to the firm, the new Auris reflects its "determination to engineer cars that are more appealing and dynamically engaging to drive," along with Toyota's traditional hallmarks of quality, durability and reliability.

Power will again come from hybrid, petrol and diesel alternatives, rear knee room is improved, and the boot space of the hybrid is this time uncompromised compared to its siblings, thanks to the batteries being repositioned beneath the rear seats. Boot space for the hybrid is therefore up 127 litres on its predecessor, and the rest of the range rises by six litres.

The car is 55mm lower than the last Auris, and the driving position is also lower, while all European production will come from Toyota's Burnsaton plant in the UK.
