Insurance pilot to monitor young at-work drivers with telematics

Date: 12 July 2012

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents in Scotland has teamed up with insurance telematics firm MyDrive Solutions to launch a pilot project using telematic devices to monitor the at-work driving of young people.

Funded by the Scottish government, it aims to monitor and improve driving behaviour and standards of young people who drive for work.

Dubbed the first of its kind in Scotland, the scheme aims to "identify how employers in Scotland can best make use of black boxes to help keep their staff and other road users safe".

The technology will provide second-by-second driver analysis, profiling a driver's habits, capabilities and driving style to risk-assess their behaviour by scoring for aggression, smoothness, anticipation, consistency and pace.

"By monitoring driving every second, we can develop a detailed picture of the real-life driving habits of young at-work drivers," said RoSPA road safety officer Kathleen Braidwood.

"Information gathered from this technology can not only motivate drivers and encourage better driving, but also improve the reputation of the company and help reduce costs."

The pilot will run until July 2013 on the cars and small vans of people aged 17-25 that drive for work, and there is no charge to organisations to participate.
