Lack of grey fleet vehicle age limit puts firms at risk

Date: 10 September 2012   |   Author: Jack Carfrae

Research by leasing firm ALD Automotive has shown that more than 80% of large companies in the UK have no age limitations on the private vehicles used by staff for business journeys.

The organisation said that the results of its YouGov survey - which relates to companies employing more than 1000 staff - prove that firms are opening themselves up to higher levels of risk in the operation of their grey fleets by not setting limits on the age of vehicles employees can drive on work business.

That is, according to ALD, leaving companies open to prosecution under the Corporate Manslaughter Act if an accident occurs and the firm hasn't taken the necessary measures to prevent it.

ALD's managing director Keith Allen said: "Despite the high profile given to corporate manslaughter legislation, grey fleet is still a big issue in the UK.

"Whilst some businesses already adopt a policy of only allowing employees to use daily rental vehicles for ad hoc business travel, for others it's important that formal guidelines for grey fleet are incorporated into the fleet policy to reduce such risk."

ALD said there are an estimated four million employees using private vehicles for work.
