Mazda is aiming to recapture the hearts and minds of fleet buyers with the all-new Mazda 6 revealed at the Moscow motor show this week.

Following in the footsteps of the CX-5 small SUV launched at the start of this year, the new Mazda 6 retains the same 'family' front end styling and also employs the Japanese manufacturer's Skyactive technology which rivals BMW's Efficient Dynamics systems.

The new 6's elegant styling hides an increase in overall length of 110mm for the saloon against the outgoing hatchback.

The increase in size as well as improved interior packaging means front shoulder room is up 20mm, rear knee room is up 43mm and rear legroom is improved by 37mm.

However, rear boot space for the new saloon is down by 27 litres (over the current hatchback) at 483 litres.

The Mazda 6 will also include a host of safety kit including the city-safety auto-braking system seen on the CX-5, auto-dipping headlights, blind spot system and lane departure warning.

Despite all this extra safety equipment, Mazda claims to have reduced the weight of the new 6 in its efforts to produce one of the most efficient models in the upper-medium segment.

While Mazda is remaining tight-lipped about the exact mpg figures for the diesel versions of the 6, hinting only that the CO2 figure will be around 105g/km, the 150hp 2.0-litre petrol version shown at the Moscow show has an official mpg figure of 47.8mpg and a CO2 output of 139g/km.

Due to the lower weight and also a good aerodynamic drag figure of 0.26 (identical to that of BMW's 320d Efficient Dynamics), Mazda hopes the 6's real-world mpg figures will also be impressive.

Drag and weight are not tested in the official mpg figures, yet contribute significantly to real-world performance.

The new Mazda 6 goes on sale as a saloon and estate at the start of 2013. Prices will be revealed nearer the 6's on sale date.
