New EU emission targets confirmed

The European Commission has confirmed emission targets for 2020. The plans will cut average emissions for new cars to 95g/km from 135.7g/km in 2011 with a binding limit of 130g/km in 2015.
Emissions from vans should drop to 147g/km in 2020 compared with 181.4g/km in 2010, with a mandatory target of 175g/km in 2017.
The Commission said the move would reduce annual fuel consumption by 27% compared with the 2015 target of 130g/km, saving an estimated ?340 (£267) a year for an average car.
There are, however, long-held fears expressed by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association that these tough targets will put pressure on the car industry and increase the price of vehicles, especially with other targets to also meet such as Euro6 standards that focus on local air pollution.
