New Seat Leon unveiled

Date: 16 July 2012   |   Author: Jack Carfrae

Seat has revealed official images of the third generation Leon lower medium hatchback.

The all new model's styling has been brought up-to-date with newer cars in Seat's range such as the Ibiza and features sharper jagged lines in comparison to the outgoing version.

It also has a longer wheelbase than the existing Leon by almost six centimetres, which, according to Seat creates additional interior space, despite the fact that it's about five centimetres shorter externally.

Boot space is up by around 40 litres to 380 litres in total and overall weight is 90kg lower.

The engine range will echo that of the current Leon, with a broad range of Volkswagen Group TSI petrol engines and TDI diesels ranging from 1.2- to 2.0-litres.

Transmissions will consist of five- and six-speed manual items and six- and seven-speed DSG automatics.

The cleanest engine will be the 105hp 1.6 TDI Ecomotive emitting 99g/km and returning 74.3mpg.

That's no more efficient than the existing Leon but the Ecomotive version will be available from launch (it wasn't previously) and lower emitting versions are expected within the new model's lifetime.

The Leon will be the first car to bear Seat's restyled badge and it will also feature new media and connectivity systems.

Two new body styles are expected to follow - an estate and a three-door - and P11D costs are not expected to vary dramatically from current prices.

The new Leon is due to go on sale in 2013 and will be unveiled in the metal at September's Paris motor show.
