Plug-in Ford Mondeo due for 2013

Date: 13 February 2012   |   Author: Guy Bird

2013 Ford Mondeo

Ford of Britain is set to offer its next-generation Mondeo with a plug-in hybrid version good for considerably more than 100mpg.

The new model range is not due until spring 2013 and will launch initially with frugal 1.6 diesel and 1.6 Ecoboost petrol engines.

However, Ford has confirmed there will be an electrically assisted large car in its European range by 2013 and, under its new 'One Ford' global car policy, already unveiled the Mondeo's all-but identical US counterpart the Fusion with production hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions.

Of the two hybrids revealed at January's Detroit motor show, the plug-in hybrid model is most likely, given the clear mpg advantage it creates versus regular petrol/electric models and current diesel offerings.

Already tipped for 100-plus mpg - or 'mpg equivalent', a new US test cycle to measure vehicles with partial or full electrification - it should register an even higher figure when judged by a similar new European test cycle and using larger UK gallons.

Based on US figures, Ford is claiming its Fusion will beat the forthcoming Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid by 13mpge and Vauxhall Ampera's US counterpart, the Chevrolet Volt, by 8mpg.

If these differentials are maintained on a European model, Ford would indeed meet its new highly publicised commitment "to be the fuel-efficiency leader - or among the leaders - with each new model brought to market".

BusinessCar was also shown early images of the actual Mondeo models to launch in Europe.

While the Fusion was shown in four-door saloon guise not due for the UK, Ford of Britain will sell the bolder five-door and Wagon models. Both will go on sale at the same time in spring 2012.
