Fleet operators and their company drivers are being offered a lifeline from the AA to help solve the "contentious and confusing" issue of contested business mileage expenses claims with a new online route mileage calculator.
With TomTom Business Solutions reporting earlier this year that 46% of company drivers over estimated mileage and over one third do so regularly the AA's online service will combine route mileage, company approved mileage rates and fuel costs related to fuel consumption plus the pump price paid.
Edmund King, AA president, said: "Claiming business mileage can be a contentious and confusing issue. By using our data claimants and businesses can keep within the law by ensuring that the figures are accurate and from a reliable source."
The system also offers the facility to calculate multiple routes, which can be printed to support claims.
Since going online with its route planner in 1999 the number of routes provided annually to AA members has risen from 250,000 to 20 million requests monthly, with a high percentage requested by business users.
An AA spokesperson added: "With fuel prices fluctuating on an almost daily basis, perhaps it is no wonder that nearly one in two drivers admit they think their expense claims are wrong."
